Epistles of Peter #4

Hey everyone.  Break is unfortunately over which means that we all have to get back to the grindstone.  I suppose all good things have to come to an end eventually.  It is also time for our next SBT meeting.  Sorry that this is such late notice (guess I kind of forgot about it over break).  As usual we will be meeting in the Biblical Justice room (3rd floor of Liechty) at 9:00pm on Tuesday March 15.  K'rin will be leading our discussion on the last two chapters of 1st Peter.  Please come having read the text and being ready to discuss it.

Events coming up

As promised, here are the links to the events that I mentioned in the meeting.  If you are planning on going to any of these please let me know as I may be interested in attending as well.

This is the MacLaurin institute which frequently has lectures as well as book clubs.  It would be great if we could get some people to attend one or two of these.  The next lecture is near the end of April.  I will announce this as the time gets closer.

Epistles of Peter #2

Thanks for everyone who came.  It was a great time tonight.  Spencer led the discussion.  It ended up being a little bit different than expected.  We did a little bit of lectio divina on 1 Peter 2, although we still had plenty of discussion.

SBT: Epistles of Peter # 2

It is time for our next meeting of the semester. As most of you know, we are going through the Epistles of Peter. This week we will be looking at 1 Peter chapter 2. To prepare, it would excellent if everyone spent some time reading chapter two and having a few discussion questions ready. As usual we will be meeting on the third floor of the Mansion at 9:00p.m. Snacks will be provided. The "bring your own mug" policy still exists.

The Epistles of Peter

It is time for us all to get our noses to the grindstone, but more importantly (well maybe) it is time for our first meeting of the new year which will take place on Thursday the 27th at 9:00 on the 3rd Floor of Leichty Hall.

This semester me and the SBT team (aka Bill Spencer and I)   decided to switch the format up a little bit.  Last semester we kept a pretty regular schedule in which different people presented papers that they had written.  Near the end of the semester we began running out of material to talk about, mainly because not nearly enough of us had written presentation worthy papers.  While we are still open to having people present papers this semester, our main goal will be focused upon doing a study of the Epistles of Peter.  Our goal is to cover one chapter every meeting.  This should get us through both epistles if we stick with this schedule.  The exciting part about this is that we will be covering a significant portion of text as well as having discussions on particular topics as they arise throughout the text.  We will certainly talk about this more at the meeting.  This week Bill will be leading the discussion but in the future, I think that it would be wonderful if we could have others lead the discussion, come up with questions, etc.

For this week, make sure you bring your Greek New Testament (If you have one.  Don't feel intimidated to come if not.).   It is also imperative that prior to coming you read both 1st and 2nd Peter.  This will ensure that we are all ready to jump right into the larger issues of the text...  And as always, there will be snacks!

A couple of things to be thinking about when reading the text:

  1. Resurrection Language.  What is Peter's understanding of resurrection?
  2. vs. 16 "Be holy because I am holy".  What is holiness?  How do we become holy?  What passages is this text drawing upon from the OT?
  3. vs. 2  What does sanctification of the Spirit mean?  What does "sprinkling by his blood" mean?  What imagery are supposed to see behind this
  4. What is Peter's view of the atonement?  How is Christ's life, death, and resurrection efficacious?
  5. How does the Word of God/Gospel/Preaching play a role in the economy of salvation according to this chapter (ch.1)?

See you all soon!

Last Couple of Weeks

These last few weeks have been quite exciting for the Society.  We have had so many different events, and most of them I have not been able to get on Facebook, or here on the blog.  Tuesday the 7th many of us attended the discussion on Abortion.  We all read an article entitled "Abortion Theologically Understood" by Stanley Hauerwauss.  What an excellent article, which spurred some very good discussion.  It also raised quite a few questions.  What is the churches role in the political realm?  What does our praxis of the gospel look like?  Thanks for all who attended that!  Then on that Friday, many of us were able to go to the Synagogue as well.  We attended Temple of Aaron Synagogue in St. Paul.  Along with the gorgeous snow, it made for a delightful evening.  On Tuesday the 14th, we had our end of year Christmas Party.  I have posted some photos from these events below.  Merry Christmas everyone.  Have a great break!
