This semester me and the SBT team (aka Bill Spencer and I) decided to switch the format up a little bit. Last semester we kept a pretty regular schedule in which different people presented papers that they had written. Near the end of the semester we began running out of material to talk about, mainly because not nearly enough of us had written presentation worthy papers. While we are still open to having people present papers this semester, our main goal will be focused upon doing a study of the Epistles of Peter. Our goal is to cover one chapter every meeting. This should get us through both epistles if we stick with this schedule. The exciting part about this is that we will be covering a significant portion of text as well as having discussions on particular topics as they arise throughout the text. We will certainly talk about this more at the meeting. This week Bill will be leading the discussion but in the future, I think that it would be wonderful if we could have others lead the discussion, come up with questions, etc.
For this week, make sure you bring your Greek New Testament (If you have one. Don't feel intimidated to come if not.). It is also imperative that prior to coming you read both 1st and 2nd Peter. This will ensure that we are all ready to jump right into the larger issues of the text... And as always, there will be snacks!
A couple of things to be thinking about when reading the text:
- Resurrection Language. What is Peter's understanding of resurrection?
- vs. 16 "Be holy because I am holy". What is holiness? How do we become holy? What passages is this text drawing upon from the OT?
- vs. 2 What does sanctification of the Spirit mean? What does "sprinkling by his blood" mean? What imagery are supposed to see behind this
- What is Peter's view of the atonement? How is Christ's life, death, and resurrection efficacious?
- How does the Word of God/Gospel/Preaching play a role in the economy of salvation according to this chapter (ch.1)?
See you all soon!
