Abortion Theologically Understood

Friends, I am so excited that it is nearly the end of the semester!  If you are anything like me, you can probably smell pine needles and other holiday scents, metaphorically speaking that is.  I honestly can't wait until our break comes, and I can read fiction books and watch a TV series all the way through.  Some people call it a waste of time, but I call it a great time.

Anyway, enough about my longing for liberation from the college life at present.  It is time for our next SBT meeting.  No one volunteered to present a paper this time around, but we still have a plan!  Last year a former graduate, Josh Dorman, presented a paper that he wrote about abortion.  He drew from several sources in his theological discussion of this topic, but one of the main articles that he drew from was an article entitled "Abortion Theologically Understood" by Stanley Hauerwass, a prominent Christian Ethicist.  I realize that this is a rather difficult topic to discuss, but this is indeed one of the goals of SBT, to discuss difficult issues.

NOTE:  this discussion will require that you read the article in full and be prepared to discuss it.  In the past, it has not always been necessary that one read the text prior to our meeting, but this is one time that it is imperative that you do.  The article is located in the Stanley Hauerwass reader which is located in the library, or you can find the article online at the following address.  http://www.lifewatch.org/abortion.html

I hope you all enjoy this article, and what it has to say, as well as the many criticisms that you might have towards it.  Also, since this is hot topic within contemporary American politics as well, feel free to invite friends that might be interested!  As usual bring your own mug if you intend to drink coffee or tea.  We will meet in the Leichty Hall Loft on Tuesday December 7
at 9:00pm.

I also wanted to remind you all of the upcoming event on Friday December 10th.  The Society for Bible and Theology will be taking a tour of Temple of Aaron conservative Judaism Synagogue.  We do need drivers for this, so if you are planning on going and have a vehicle, please let me know so that we can arrange rides for everyone.  This is also on the web site societyforbibleandtheology.blogspot.com  calendar.  I hope to see you all there!!  Please RSVP either here or on the FB page so we can accomodate snacks and coffee.  Thanks
